Visualizing relationship networks
Collaboration is crucial; it spurs innovation and propels institutions forward. So how can we understand and cultivate these networks of collaboration? As part of a campus master plan, we asked faculty to tell who they work with most often. We then aggregated and visualized the results, looking for patterns across departments and across the campus itself.
One of the strongest connections turned out to be between the health sciences (currently located on a satellite campus) and life sciences (located on the main campus). With this insight, we proposed a new location for the life sciences to put these two groups closer together on campus. This move will make collaboration easier, cultivating even more of the innovative ideas and solutions at the heart of the university's mission.
